This is a wonderful pair of memorial brass rubbings. Dame Elizabeth St. John was the daughter of Henry, Lord Scrope of Bolton. Sir Oliver was her second husband and he came from an old and influential family. They had five sons and three daughters. Dame Elizabeth wears a kennek or pedimental head-dress. She wears a narrow sleeved gown with fur trimmed cuffs and a high neck, the waist is loosely clasped with a long girdle.
Sir Oliver was a second son. Both sides of his family continues to this day. Sir Oliver's mother married for a second time after his father's death. Her second husband was John Beaufort, Duke of Somerset. Through their daughter Margaret she was grandmother to Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch. Sit Oliver's armor is from the early Tudor period with a mailed shirt and square toed sabbatons on his feet.
Each rubbing measures approximately 10 by 20 inches and will arrive ready for mounting and framing.
