This rubbing is of Sir John D’Aubernoun, c. 1277. He is buried at Stoke D’Abernon, Surrey, Great Britain. His monumental brass is generally considered the earliest of all English brasses to survive and is the only representation of a knight carrying a lance as well as a sword. Sir John is shown wearing armor of the Surcoat period, with a sleeveless gown (surcoat) of cloth worn over the armor reaching below the knees with a slit at the from to the waist. This surcoat is worn over a hauberk (shirt) of mail with sleeves extending over his hands and included chain mail stockings down to his toes. He is also wearing kneecaps and strapped to his feet are pointed spurs.
