Richard and Elizabeth Wakehurst are a stunning couple and one of the few Monumental Brasses of a couple where the canopy above their heads remains intact. Richard was an attorney to the Earl of Arundel in addition to holding down several appointments given to him by the Crown. In 1412 he was a Member of Parliament and was also a member of several banking commissions between 1415 and 1430. Richard is shown wearing civilian dress of the period that included a long gown with fur cuffs and collar, a finger ring, and a belt from which hangs a purse and tasseled rosary beads.  Elizabeth was Richard's second wife. They had one son and two daughters. The son died without children so the two girls became co-heiresses to their father's estate. Interestingly enough, they married bothers, Nicholas and Richard Culpeper who's descendents were later to play a significant role in history during the reign of Henry VIII. Elizabeth's gown is reminiscent of older fashions of her time with an English hood headdress. The Latin Inscription at the bottom of their memorial is translated as:

"Pray for the souls of Richard Wakehurst Esquire and Elisabeth his wife, the daughter of Robert Echyngham which Richard died the 4th day of January A.D. 1454 and the aforesaid Elysabeth died the 19th day of July 1464, on whose souls may God have mercy"

It is interesting to note that Elizabeth's name is spelled two different ways in the inscription.

This stunning rubbing measures approximately 25 by 65 inches and will arrive ready for mounting and framing.
