This brass rubbing is a section from the DeScornay Brass and is the Abbess Margaret DeScornay and the Dragon. The DeScornay Brass is part of the upper third portion of a large Flemish brass that was damaged in 1940 when the church was bombed. Many of the monuments were badly damaged or destroyed. The Abbey of Nivelles was one of the most important in Belgium, founded in about 639 for St. Gertrude. The abbesses were rulers of Nivelles with rights of justice and coinage under a charter of 1261 from John 1, Duke of Brabant. Marguerite de Scornay was elected abbess in 1443. This panel rubbing follows a well established iconographic type during the fifteenth century. Tombs and altarpieces in the Low Countries displayed the deceased donor being introduced to Christ or Our Lady by their patron Saint. The original background of the brass was red and the heraldry all colored and gilt, but the heat and fire melted the enamel.
This lovely rubbing measures approximately 20 by 24 inches. It will arrive ready for mounting and framing.
