This rubbing is of Ethelred, King of the West Saxons who died in 871. Although Ethelred died in 871, the brass was not created until some 600 years later in about 1400. The inscription at the bottom was restored in the 17th century. King Ethelred is shown as a half effigy wearing a crown, scepter and ermine tippet. This is the only surviving original English brass devoted entirely to a King.

King Ethelred measures approximately 15 by 20 inches. He has been made with heelball on black paper produced specifically for brass rubbing. He will arrive ready for mounting and framing
