Farthingale

An underskirt that was stretched over hoops to support skirts. The farthingales shape depended on the silhouette currently in fashion. They were made out of many fabrics from coarse linen to taffeta or silk depending upon the wearer’s economic status and preferences. The hoops were made of iron wire, whalebone, steel, cording, and other materials.
